The San Gorgonio Pass was discovered in 1853 by surveyors seeking a rail route from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. The sleepy town of San Gorgonio became incorporated on November 18, 1912 and adopted its current name of Beaumont (French for “beautiful mountain”).

Within a few decades, our city’s productive apple plantations and close proximity to Palm Springs led to an influx of residents and tourists who came to enjoy the city’s many guest ranches.

Since 2000, Beaumont’s convenient location, low housing costs and ideal climate have made it the fastest growing city in California.

Beaumont sits at an elevation of approximately 2,500-3,000 feet above sea level. Because of this, our temperatures are usually 5-10 degrees cooler than other Inland Empire cities. Summertime highs average 95 degrees, with winter lows reaching the low 50s; snow is rare.

The Beaumont area is home to 12 schools, with 9 in the city and an additional 3 in nearby Cherry Valley. These include 7 elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 3 high schools. For higher education, Crafton Hills College is in close proximity, as well as a wide variety of regional universities.

Area healthcare is provided by San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning, Lorma Linda University Med Center and Apex Urgent Care. Numerous other healthcare specialists and doctors are available throughout the region.
